skill vs. talent

The difference between skill and talent is the difference between something you inherited, and something you earned. You can't really take credit for having talent, but you can take credit for having skill- it's something that you worked hard for, something that you sweated for.

Think of "handedness". Maybe you started out with your right hand slightly more talented than your left hand, so you used it more. The gap you have currently is almost entirely skill, not talent.

You know that saying that it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill? (Probably less, actually, unless you want to reach the very top.) Well, those hours aren't talent- they're skill and practice.

You don't need talent to be good at something.

  1. I needed this today. I needed to be told that I had a large part of those 10,000 hours left. Thank you.
